Third Inter-American Language Management
Seminar - "Inter-American Language Policies
in a Multipolar World"
Rio de Janeiro – May 29-31, 2006

Objectives

Take initiatives to encourage multilingualism in inter-American institutions and propose implementation of the resolutions set out at the first two editions of the Seminar.

Primary Objective
The objective of the Seminar is to develop strategies to support the promotion and dissemination of the languages and cultures of the Americas and to discuss actions that establish language policies, in order to better position the four major languages of the Americas with respect to all international activities (negotiations, organizations, Internet, science and technology, trade, etc.) and, as well, to encourage the use of other languages of the Americas in various sectors of daily life (education, health, government services, justice, etc.).

Type of Meeting
The Seminar is not simply a scientific forum on the subject—many seminars and much research have already dealt with the issue—it is intended to be a place where practical solutions can be proposed, concrete examples displayed, project creation encouraged, multilateral discussions sparked, and most of all, actions recommended to the governments of the Americas and to international organizations.
