Currency
 

The monetary unit is the real (R$). United States dollars are often accepted.


Climate
 

Good weather all year round, with occasional rain in June and heavy rain in the summer. Average temperature 37°C (100° F) in summer (December to March) and 22° C (71° F) in winter (June to September).


Water
 

The water supply is acceptable in Rio de Janeiro, but given its high chlorine level it is advisable to drink bottled mineral water.


Rio de Janeiro International Airport (Tom Jobim)
 

Before leaving the airport, go to one of the taxi ranks located in the unloading zone and pay for the trip (fixed rate) to the district where your hotel is located (Copacabana, Ipanema or Leblon). There are several taxi companies: COOPERTAXI, COOPARIOCA, COOPERTRAMO, etc. The price for one journey is about 40 reais. The tip (10 % of the price) is not obligatory.

Duration of the trip to Leblon : 35 minutes (25 km)


Secondary airport - Santos Dumont Airport (SDU) (domestic flights)
 

The special taxi for the hotel (airport pick-up zone) costs some 25 reais.

Taxis outside the airport
 

Rio de Janeiro is served by taxi companies and individuals. Cars are generally air-conditioned at no additional cost. There are two rates: Rate 1, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Rate 2 from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.. Receipts are given on request.

Use taxi companies where possible (yellow, white or red taxis).

It is advisable to check whether your credit card is accepted in Brazil before leaving. There are ATMs where you can withdraw reais with an international card just about everywhere, and in particular in branches of the Banco do Brasil:

Credit cards and cheques
 

The main international credit cards (Visa, Master Card, Diner’s Club and American Express) are accepted. It is advisable to ensure that your card will be accepted beforehand, especially in restaurants.

Some shops will give a small discount for cash payments.

Travellers’ cheques are generally accepted but cheques drawn on foreign banks are not.


Post offices
  Post offices are open from Monday to Friday. Most hotels offer a postal service for cards and parcels, and a packing service.


Electricity
  110 volts, 60 cycles AC
220-volt sockets are available in most hotels.



Shops
  Most shops open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the week. They close at 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Shopping centres are also open on Saturdays (from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.) and Sundays (from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m.).


Security
  You are advised not to wear valuable objects and to keep only small amounts of money on you. You are also advised not to go out alone at night and to take taxis rather than buses.


Telecommunications
  It is possible to make international calls (IDD) from most hotel rooms. Some hotels also provide a fax and Internet service in rooms or from the reception desk or conference rooms.


Clothing
  Clothing tends to be casual in Rio de Janeiro. In general, men wear suits and ties to the office only. It is a good idea to take a light jumper as most restaurants, bars, the underground and taxis are air-conditioned.
