Third Inter-American Language Management
Seminar - "Inter-American Language Policies
in a Multipolar World"
Rio de Janeiro – May 29-31, 2006

Introduction

Organizers

This meeting, which continues the work of the first two editions (Quebec City, August 2002 and Asunción, June 2003), will propose actions to create a balance among the positions of official languages in the Americas and to reinforce the position of other languages spoken on the continent.

Background

The four major languages of the continent (English, French, Portuguese and Spanish) do not enjoy equal status in all inter-American organizations, nor in international negotiations, nor in other sectors of interest to the people of the Americas (Internet, science and technology, media, availability of products and services, etc.). Furthermore, even though some Creoles and native languages have official status or are protected in certain states or regions (for example, Haiti, Paraguay and Peru), most have no currency in more critical sectors such as education, justice, health or government services.

This is the third edition of the Seminar. The first took place in Quebec City, Canada, in August 2002, at the instigation of the Quebec and Canadian governments, and the second in Asunción, Paraguay, in June 2003, at the invitation of Paraguay’s Ministry of Education.
