Gabriel Huard received a bachelor’s degree in translation from the Université de Montréal in 1975.

That same year, he started his career in the Translation Bureau of the Canadian government—first as a translator, and since 1984 as a manager. In 1990, he was appointed director of Scientific and Technical Translation.

Since May 2001, Mr. Huard has been the director of the Translation Bureau’s Terminology Standardization Directorate, which is responsible for enriching the contents of TERMIUM®, the linguistic data bank of the Government of Canada. This data bank currently contains 3.5 million terms in English and French, Canada’s two official languages, and 160 000 terms in Spanish.

As director of the TSD, he is responsible for collaboration agreements with universities and governments as well as several private enterprises and international organizations.

In the national standardization networks, Mr. Huard chairs the Federal Terminology Council (FTC), where federal government department representatives meet, and the National Terminology Council (NTC), the group for provincial government representatives interested in terminology. He is also the Translation Bureau’s point of contact for international standardization networks in the Francophonie and the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries. As such, he represents the Translation Bureau at Rifal (Réseau international francophone d’aménagement linguistique) and Rilac (Réseau international des langues africaines et créoles), which come under the umbrella of the OIF (Organisation internationale de la Francophonie), as well as at Realiter (Réseau panlatin de terminologie) and RITerm (Réseau ibéroaméricain de terminologie).
